Casa Lenta

In the heart of Teulada, a village on the southern coast of the island of Sardinia, lies Casa Lenta, an ode to patience and care. This refuge, born from the restructuring of a 1930s building, preserves the soul of the past while embracing the needs of the present.

The restoration was conceived as an act of respect for history. The original perimeter stone walls were carefully cleaned and left exposed, forming a raw, solid foundation. Rising above, original adobe walls were treated and protected to ensure functionality. Structural wooden elements support a pitched roof covered with reed cane and tiles, paying homage to the vernacular building traditions of the region. This roof not only shelters but creates a visual dialogue, liberating the interior where space breathes with light and openness.
Every tile and floor of the house has been meticulously recovered and reused, honoring their history and character. A thorough site survey uncovered the house’s essential features, its architectural soul. The former interior layout, consisting of three interconnected rooms, has been reimagined in the new design. Yet traces of this original organization endure subtly: material transitions in the floors preserve the memory of the old rooms, a tangible echo of the past that resonates in the present.

Casa Lenta unveils a simple and thoughtful layout. The bathroom acts as an articulating element—a freestanding box that separates the day area from the study without touching the roof. From the study, one can access a loft offering an elevated, intimate corner. The only newly built structure is the bedroom, a space that respects and complements the overall harmony of the place.

At the heart of the house lies a vibrant garden transformed into a vegetable patch. It serves as point of arrival, space for gathering, and bridge between the interior and exterior, also establishing a connection with an adjacent volume awaiting future intervention.
Casa Lenta is not just a dwelling; it is a manifesto of care and slowness in its most poetic sense. Every corner, every texture, and every material invite a conscious way of living, where time flows gently, leaving space to breathe, to contemplate, and to reconnect with the essence of what a home truly means.
